The thing about the last Tuesday in June is that the students are gone and the summer people haven't figured us out yet, so the shop goes quiet in a way that feels less like slow business and more like the building exhaling. I had the front door propped open with the brick Earl gave me,[^1] a box fan pushing warm air around to no real purpose, and a piano hymn going soft on the speaker while I restocked the iced cups and told Betsy she was doing a good job even though nobody had ordered espresso in an hour. This is the summer rhythm. You stop performing productivity and start just — being there. Waiting to be useful. Watering the one succulent I haven't managed to kill yet and privately congratulating both of us on surviving.

Then the bell went, and a young man came through the door like it owed him money.

He was maybe twenty-two, in a button-down buttoned all the way to the collar, the kind of shirt that's an apology to somebody, and he was sweating clean through it. Phone in one hand, keys still in the other. He said, before hello, before anything, "What's the fastest thing you can make me?"

Now, "fastest" is a word that does something complicated to me, because I have opinions about speed and coffee and the whole modern assumption that the two belong together — but I have learned, in almost two years of this, to read the room before I read the lecture, and this room was one nervous person and a lot of heat.

"Drip," I said. "Ten seconds. Black or with room?"

"Black. Please. Thank you." He glanced at the clock over the book exchange, then out the window, where I now saw the hood of a sedan up in the parking spot out front, a thin ghost of steam curling off it into the sun. "My car did a thing. On the highway. It made a smell and then a light came on, and I got off at your exit, and it's fine, it just needs to — I don't know. Not be on fire for a minute."

I reached for a to-go cup and took the whole sleeve with me, forty of them cascading off the counter and bouncing across the hardwood in that specific way that sounds exactly as expensive as it isn't. "It's fine," I said — to him, to the cups, to Betsy. "They're clean, they bounce, this is a design feature." I was on my knees gathering them into my apron. "Where's the car trying to get you?"

"Job interview." He said it the way you'd report a weather event happening to somebody else. "Two towns over. Eleven o'clock. It's a good job. Regional sales, benefits, my dad knows the guy. It's very — sensible."

Every word right. His face saying none of them.

Because I knew that face. I have made that face, in a car, hands at ten and two, driving toward a future that fit me the way a stranger's coat fits — warm, technically, and wrong at every seam. I was almost thirty before I turned the car around and drove the other way. This kid had beaten me to the intersection by about seven years, and he was, at this exact moment, thirty-some minutes early to a life he kept describing like a hostage reading a statement.

So I didn't make him the drip.

I pulled the Costa Rican instead — a light roast, bright and clean, something like honey underneath — and set the kettle on and got out the pour-over cone, which is the slowest way I know how to make a cup of coffee on purpose. "Your car needs about twenty minutes to cool down before you put water anywhere near it, or you'll crack the engine block," I said, with all the authority of someone who has never once cracked an engine block but has read about it thoroughly. "That's just physics. You can't rush it. So." I nodded at the corner table — the little two-seater by the window, the one the regulars know. "Sit. This one takes a few minutes."

"I'm going to be early."

"You're already early. Now you'll be early and awake."

He sat. I poured the water in slow circles and watched the grounds bloom, that first dark exhale of fresh coffee, and I thought about how nobody ever tells you that the scariest part of freedom isn't the big dramatic door. It's the twenty quiet minutes beforehand — the ones where you have to sit still long enough to notice you have a choice at all. My whole childhood was built to keep me out of those twenty minutes. Keep busy, keep covered, keep moving where you're pointed. A body in motion never has to ask where it's headed.

I carried the cup over. He wrapped both hands around it even though it was eighty degrees out, which is a thing scared people do — hold the warm thing.

"That's not fast," he said.

"No," I said. "It's yours, though. I made it one cup at a time. Nobody else in the world is getting this exact cup." I don't know where that came from. It just came.

He looked at the coffee. Then he looked out the window at the cemetery across the way — St. Francis, the old stones going gold in the light — and something in his shoulders came down half an inch. He drank it slow. He didn't say anything for a while, and I let him not say anything, because I've learned that's a service too. Maybe the main one.

When he stood up, twenty-some minutes later, he set the empty cup on the counter and got out his keys. "I still think I'm going to take the job." A pause. "But I'm going to ask him different questions than I was going to."

"That's the whole thing," I said, and I meant it more than he knew.

"I'm Caleb, by the way." He said it like it had only just occurred to him that he was a person and not just an emergency. "Thanks for the — for the slow one."

"Come back through sometime, Caleb. Tell me which questions."

The bell. And he was gone — out to the sedan, hood down now, off toward eleven o'clock and his sensible benefits and whatever he'd decided to ask.

I picked up his cup. There was a little honey-colored ring left in the bottom, the Costa Rican leaving its evidence, and I stood there in the quiet with the fan going and the hymn turning over, and I thought about that old word workmanship — the one that says you were made on purpose, for something, by Someone who does not deal in sensible-but-wrong.[^2] I didn't have a verse ready. I just had the cup, and the twenty minutes, and the strange holy arithmetic of it: that sometimes the most useful thing a broken-down car ever does is make a person sit down.

I washed the cup and set it on the shelf to dry and told Betsy she'd done good work.

She had. We both had.
